2023: David Rachline and the “raptors”

After the journalistic revelations, the time for legal investigations. The Draguignan public prosecutor’s office announced, on December 10, the opening of a preliminary investigation targeting the town hall of Fréjus, led since 2014 by the vice-president of the National Rally, David Rachline, for suspicion of “illegal taking of interests » and « favoritism » on the sidelines of public procurement awards. This procedure follows the release, in November, of the book Raptors. Investigation into Marine Le Pen’s “Var mafia” (The arenas). The journalist of The Obs Camille Vicogne Le Coat details the expensive lifestyle of Mayor RN, a cash lover, and his close ties with an influential local businessman.

2021: Fabien Engelmann and photocopiers

Mayor of Hayange (Moselle) since 2014 – he was 35 years old at the time – Fabien Engelmann proves that legal troubles do not wait for the number of years. Barely elected, this former CGT unionist was sentenced, in December 2014, to one year of ineligibility and non-reimbursement of his campaign expenses, for omitted expenses. In June 2015, the Council of State canceled the sanction of ineligibility. Remaining mayor, Fabien Engelmann was indicted in 2017 for not having, at the start of his mandate, respected the public procurement code when purchasing photocopiers for his city’s schools. He pleads lack of experience. On May 11, 2021, he was sentenced to a suspended fine.

2019: Jacques Bompard and capital gains

For a long time, legal concerns did not prevent Jacques Bompard from wearing his scarf as mayor of Orange. In this town in Vaucluse, he was elected in 1995, under the National Front banner, and re-elected four times, the last in 2020. In May 2019, the courts sentenced him to six months in prison and a fine for “taking illegal interests” dating back to 2004 and 2005, but without penalty of ineligibility. He was accused of the sale by the municipality of real estate to members of his family who then made capital gains. On appeal, in March 2021, the sentence was increased by five years of ineligibility. The moment for him to leave his mayoral chair to his son, Yann Bompard.

2011: Daniel Simompieri and friendship

“He’s a scoundrel or incompetent,” estimated, in an unflattering alternative, the prosecutor during her appeal trial, in 2011, for “favoritism, false invoices and fictitious employment”. Arriving at the head of Marignane (Bouches-du-Rhône), in 1995, under the National Front label, Daniel Simonpieri changed his political chasuble several times – first that of the MNR of Bruno Mégret (resulting from a split from the FN), during his re-election in 2001, then the UMP, which did not prevent him from being beaten in 2008. In November 2011, he was convicted, in particular for having had work carried out by municipal officials at his home. “I have a big flaw, I walk towards friendship”, he then pleaded.
