A study on the risk of dementia in people with hearing loss was withdrawn because, according to the journal The Lancet Public Health, there were errors in data analysis.

The journal “The Lancet Public Health” has a study published in April that was also picked up by FAZ.NET withdrawn, which focused on preventing dementia through hearing aids in older people. The authors of the publication admitted at the end of November that data had been mixed up during the evaluation, resulting in “false and misleading results and conclusions,” as the journal announced on Wednesday. The errors were discovered after other scientists tried to reproduce the results of the study.

The research team led by Dongshan Zhu from Shandong University in Jinan, China reported in the study that people with hearing loss who do not wear hearing aids have a 42 percent increased risk of dementia than people without hearing loss. However, if people who are hard of hearing wear a hearing aid, the risk is the same as for people with normal hearing, the researchers explained in the now withdrawn study.
