MADRID, 13 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The US State Department said Wednesday that an immediate end to the Israeli military campaign against the Islamic Resistance Movement would not be in Israel’s long-term security interests.

This was stated by the State Department spokesperson, Matthew Miller, who, however, acknowledged that the resolution approved the day before by the UN General Assembly demonstrates “that the world wants this conflict to end.”

“It is an objective that we share (…) We do not want this to last a day longer than necessary,” said the spokesman for US diplomacy at a press conference, according to information collected by the CNN news network.

Thus, Miller has pointed out that the Israel Defense Forces may be capable of defeating Hamas, but “you cannot defeat an idea on the battlefield,” thus acknowledging his doubts regarding the future in Gaza after a hypothetical Israeli victory.

“At the end of this conflict, there needs to be a legitimate response to the aspirations of the Palestinian people,” said Miller, who leaves the solution to this situation in the hands of the United States, Israel and other states in the region.

In this sense, he has pointed out that the Palestinian Authority, led by Mahmud Abbas, is “the representative of the Palestinian people” and that, if it is “revitalized, reformed and renewed”, it can be “the right path to govern a reunified West Bank and Gaza.” “.

Thus, despite showing his approval for the Palestinian Authority to manage the Palestinian enclave in the future, Miller has stressed that “obviously the Palestinian Authority is not in a position to intervene tomorrow and begin to administer Gaza.”

These statements come after the UN General Assembly on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved a resolution in favor of an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza after the United States vetoed a similar measure in the Security Council.

Hamas launched an unprecedented attack against Israel on October 7, leaving almost 1,200 dead and 240 hostages. The Israeli Army responded with a bloody military campaign against the Palestinian militia that has already claimed more than 18,600 lives in the Gaza Strip.
