Tesla will recall more than two million vehicles to correct a safety problem in its autonomous driving system, which the company says can be solved with an over-the-air software update that will be offered for free.
This initiative has been communicated after the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) detected, after an investigation of several years, that the autopilot controls installed in thousands of Tesla vehicles are not capable of avoiding a “improper use” in certain circumstances that could lead to “an increased risk of accident.”
According to the communication published by the largest automobile safety regulator in the United States, “in certain circumstances, when automatic steering is activated, the prominence and reach of the function’s controls may not be sufficient to prevent the driver from misusing of the SAE Level 2 advanced driver assistance function.
This is the second time this year that Tesla, owned by the controversial Elon Musk, has called for a review of some of its vehicles on the market due to a problem detected in its increasingly automated driving systems, the subject of close scrutiny after have been linked to the reasons for hundreds of accidents.
