Embarkations to Great Britain from the port of Calais, in Pas-de-Calais, are blocked due to a strike by the CGT Ports and Docks, the port told AFP, specifying that the social movement caused “huge” congestion.
This blockage is part of a call for national mobilization from the CGT Ports and Docks, “against the pension reform and for additional resources at the port level”, specifies the CGT secretary of the port of Calais, Sébastien Ternisien.
All boarding to England is impossible
Access to the port has been blocked since very early on and the access ring road is “completely saturated”, explains the port of Calais, specifying that the prefecture is setting up diversions to relieve traffic congestion.
“From Dover [Angleterre] towards Calais, trucks can disembark, but any boarding is impossible,” indicates the port. The congestion “is enormous, because on Thursday there is freight traffic”. The strike, which began at 3 a.m., can last up to 24 hours depending on the strike notice, according to the CGT.
The strikers must meet mid-morning to discuss the follow-up to the movement, indicates Mr. Ternisien.
