Police Warn of Clever Sting Targeting Electronic Payment App Users

The Israel Police recently issued a warning about a sophisticated fraud targeting users of payment apps such as Bit and Paybox. The scam involves sending SMS messages to users, claiming that their accounts have been suspended due to unauthorized access. The message instructs the user to click on a link to confirm their information.

In a press release, the Israel Police stated, “Did you receive an SMS message from the payment apps Bit or Paybox? You may be exposed to fraud.” They also shared a screenshot of the fraudulent message, which reads, “Your account has been suspended due to unauthorized access. Please confirm your information” and includes a link for the user to log in.

The police advised users to be cautious and to update their personal details directly through the payment application, rather than clicking on external links received in SMS messages. They emphasized the importance of vigilance and urged users to be on the lookout for such fraudulent messages.

“In both cases you have to be careful, this is a particularly clever and well-invested sting and you can easily get confused because it is really an application, entering the details may put you at risk and expose your credit information to the people who are behind the fraud in question,” the police added.

The public is being warned to remain vigilant and to exercise caution when receiving any suspicious messages related to their electronic payment applications. It is important to verify the authenticity of any messages received and to be wary of clicking on any links that may put personal and financial information at risk.
