Göran Stiernstedt Named New Chairman of Karolinska University Hospital

After serving as the chairman of Karolinska University Hospital, Håkan Sörman is being replaced by Göran Stiernstedt. According to reports by Dagens Samhälle, the decision to replace Sörman was made by the red-green board in Stockholm, leaving Sörman without any explanation as to why he is being removed from the position.

In an interview with the newspaper, Sörman expressed his desire to continue in his role, highlighting the positive results achieved during his tenure. He emphasized that under his leadership, there has been an increase in care placements, reduced managerial positions, elimination of queues in cancer care, and a surplus in the hospital’s finances for three consecutive years, following previous deficits amounting to billions.

Despite his achievements, Sörman revealed that the chairman of the regional board, Aida Hadzialic (S), did not provide a specific reason for his replacement.

In the wake of these developments, the appointment of Göran Stiernstedt as the new chairman has drawn attention. Stiernstedt, a qualified infectious disease doctor, has held significant roles in healthcare, including serving as the head of the department for care and social care at Sweden’s Municipalities and County Councils. On the other hand, Sörman has previously served as the CEO of Sweden’s Municipalities and Regions.

The decision to replace Sörman has not been without controversy, as opposition parties including the Moderates, Liberals, Christian Democrats, and Sweden Democrats have raised objections against the proposal.

The transition in leadership at Karolinska University Hospital has sparked debate and speculation, with stakeholders eagerly awaiting further insights into the circumstances surrounding Sörman’s departure and Stiernstedt’s assumption of the role.
