Woman accused of fatally stabbing teen outside Galleria Mall was out on bond

Houston, Texas (KTRK) — A 17-year-old girl was tragically stabbed to death during a robbery outside the Galleria Mall over the weekend, and it has been revealed that the suspect was out on bond at the time of the incident.

The victim, Kayla Nicole Stevenson, was described as a new mom who was working two jobs to support her family.

The suspect, 37-year-old Kaysone Sky Blossom, has been charged with capital murder in Kayla’s death. According to court documents, this is not the suspect’s first run-in with the law. Blossom was reportedly out on bond for an aggravated assault of a family member charge from 2021, in which she allegedly cut her ex-boyfriend with a knife. The case has yet to go to trial nearly three years later.

Blossom was released on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond, meaning she was free to go and didn’t need to pay any money unless she failed to appear or violated her bond.

Records show that 14 of Blossom’s court dates were reset, and her trial date was reset five times. She was scheduled to appear in court for her capital murder charge on Thursday morning, but she did not appear due to a medical hold.

Kayla’s mother, Kylie Stevenson, expressed her frustration, stating, “I feel that it could have been avoided if she wasn’t out on the streets, so if she was behind bars like she was supposed to be, then my daughter will still be with me here today and her daughter.”

Amid the three years when Blossom was out on bond, she was self-publishing children’s books, a fact that Kayla’s mom did not know about until she was informed by ABC13.

City officials have blamed court backlogs for high crime rates, with some criminals being released and re-offending. Both of Blossom’s cases are now in the 230th District Court.

The fatal stabbing occurred near Saks Fifth Avenue on West Alabama Street at Sage Road while Kayla was walking to work. Police said she was allegedly robbed by Blossom, who then stabbed her and left her to die. Blossom also allegedly robbed Kayla of her purse, which contained her wallet, phone, and keys.

Blossom was arrested without incident at her home on Beechnut Street on Wednesday, after tips from the community helped investigators identify her.

Kayla’s family said she leaves behind a 6-month-old baby, and her mother had a message for the suspect, stating, “I hope it eats away at you and you definitely pay severely for your crime, for this crime that you did.”

The case will continue to develop as the suspect faces her capital murder charge in court.
