Golden Globes 2024 Nominations Announced

The 2024 Golden Globes nominations have officially kicked off a new era for the embattled awards body. The nominations, announced by comedian Cedric the Entertainer and actor Wilmer Valderrama, marked a momentous affair for awards season as the first major-network awards show to reveal its year-end nominees for the best movies and TV shows, performances, and technical work in entertainment.

Barbie emerged as a strong front-runner after garnering several nominations, including Best Picture — Musical or Comedy, Director (Greta Gerwig), and Best Actress — Musical or Comedy (Margot Robbie). Other major titles that received significant nods were Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, Past Lives, and Succession.

In the film category, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie blockbuster led the motion picture nominees after appearing in nine categories. The film was closely followed by Oppenheimer, which earned eight nominations, and Killers of the Flower Moon and Poor Things with seven and six nominations, respectively.

On the TV side, the final season of Succession added nine nominations to its massive series-long haul. The Bear and Only Murders in the Building also received significant recognition, with both projects earning five nominations each.

HBO and Max led the overall TV nominees with 17 network nods, followed by Netflix with 15. Netflix, however, led the film nominations with placements in 13 categories, trailed closely behind by Warner Bros., which pulled in 12.

After years of controversy, the 2024 Golden Globes feature two new competitive categories: Cinematic and Box Office Achievement in Motion Pictures for theatrical projects that grossed at least $150 million globally, and Best Stand-Up Comedian on Television recognizes TV-based stand-up comedy sets of at least 30 minutes in length.

The changes come after the Golden Globes dissolved the historic Hollywood Foreign Press Association group in June, following controversy and criticism for a lack of diversity among its members. The Golden Globes will move networks to CBS (with a companion livestream on Paramount+) in 2024, after decades of broadcasts on NBC.

The 2024 Golden Globes are scheduled to air on Sunday, Jan. 7 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on CBS and Paramount+.
