These are the ten technologies with which Spain could be a leader: “Science is also a race for the economy of the future”

Technology Default encrypted messages finally arrive on Messenger after seven years

There are many who think that public opinion is confused by the speed of current affairs, however, it is a reality that the current debate is supported “in three pillars that are digitalization, health and the energy transition”explains to EL MUNDO Javier Garca, National Research Award granted by the Ministry of Science and Innovation.

At the same time, it is in these three sectors that the INTEC 2023a report carried out at the national level by the Rafael del Pino Foundationand that counts as a precedent the one that is presented with the same periodicity in the World Economic Forumof which García is also an expert member.

In both cases it is a list of emerging technologies that “is not intended to be a ranking”, but rather to offer “a long-term vision of how to put science and technology at the center of the debate […] “since science is a race towards knowledge, but also a race towards the economy of the future.”

Of course, García insists that this list does not make predictions, nor do the technologies intend to present themselves as solutions, but rather their objective is establish a roadmap for “an economy that allows him to advance in this career […] based on deep science.”

The also president of the International Union of Chemistry, assures that in this ‘scientific race’ all the participating agents of an economy must attend, such as public administrations, scientists, but also entrepreneurs, since “the challenge is who is going to transfer that science from the laboratory to industry” and, therefore, also to society. Although he also warns, “you need to do good science to do technological entrepreneurship.”

In García’s eyes, this is an issue of vital importance, which is why he encourages us to “rethink the educational model so that let’s not only educate in sciencebut also in this possibility of being transferred to the market”.

At this point, it is time to list these technologies that although “some sound geeky” are beginning to make headlines in the press, such as generative AI with the emergence of ChatGPT in a multitude of areas or the advances in terms of messenger RNA that have jumped to the fore. public opinion with covid vaccines.

GENERATIVE AI: “The big business of our time”

In addition to having become the “largest phenomenon of mass subscription since the birth of the Internet”, this discipline has given huge steps in effectivenesssince training is much faster and requires fewer and fewer resources, even though there are billions of data processed by Chat GPT – the most everyday example of this type of AI.

At this moment, however, “it is not only the quantity, but also the quality of that training”, an issue that opens a great window for Spain, since “we have a lot of key industries where the possibility of interacting with generative artificial intelligence creates countless business opportunities.”

One of these opportunities lies in the structuring and labeling of the databases that the machines process, something that he considers could be “the great business of our time”. And if quality is necessary, its protection is also of great importance, says García.

QUANTUM PHYSICS COULD PUT CURRENT CYBERSECURITY IN CHECK

Experts also include quantum physics as an area in which the country’s business fabric can be promoted and placed at the forefront. In fact, García states that “Spain is a leader in supercomputing” and exemplifies it with the Center dedicated to the subject located in Barcelona.

However, he clarifies that it is conventional supercomputing, “so to maintain that leadership, Spain has to be attentive to quantum computing.” Such technology, however, could put the current cybersecurity in check which we have, since “it is based on prime numbers, if quantum computing enters, it will no longer be safe.”

Given this situation, it is easy to think that technologies are being developed that could harm the current ones. A paradox that García summarizes in “this is science.” And “there is a race at full speed in which there is always a compromise between the opportunity it represents and the risks we have to face.” A competition that also “happens in real time and Spain cannot be left behind,” emphasizes the expert.

CYBERSECURITY AGAINST CYBERWAR

For that same reason, INTEC 2023 also includes efforts in cybersecurity as one of these emerging technologies since “there is a clear commitment on the part of the technological community to develop more effective, sophisticated and sustainable solutions”, to avoid cases such as hacking Air Europa or the Barcelona Clinic.

MESSENGER RNA, ALSO AGAINST CNCER

As for messenger RNA, the enormous possibilities that this technology offers to scientific research are the reason why it is included. And although it was made known during the coronavirus pandemic, it is of great importance to continue working with it, since in addition to being studied “for other future pandemics, also to combat cancer”explains Garcia.

The scientist also does not forget to insist on what the race that was undertaken worldwide to combat Covid meant, since it demonstrated “the capabilities of companies to bring this discovery to the market as soon as possible.” He questions that he considers that reflects the essence of INTEC.

5G, BUT PRIVATE

And if they were able to demonstrate it during the pandemic, the experts who participated in the preparation of this report consider that They can also do it in the creation of private 5G networks. García explains that the installation of these networks will allow them to “share content and create new business models.”

NUCLEAR ENERGY: “THE COUNTRY HAS NEVER SAID ANYTHING”

In this case García once again insists on the essence of the report, since “it is not that we are advocating nuclear energy”, but it is true “that since democracy began in Spain There has never been a social debate about the energy model “There has been talk of many issues such as subsidies for renewables or the closure of this type of plants, but “the country has never said anything.”

Although awareness campaigns about the risks of nuclear energy have been able to stop its spread, the industry has increased its efforts to innovate. In this case, small modular reactors (SMR) are the protagonists, because are “much cheaper and much less dangerous, also from the point of view of accident”.

DIGITALIZATION AGAINST FIRE

As in nuclear energy, with regard to fires – now in the sixth generation – “solutions are sought, even if they are not the favorites.” Among them are digital tools in terms of prevention, detection, extinction and reforestation.

INTELLIGENT DIAGNOSIS TO REDUCE HOSPITAL PRESSURE

In the field of medicine, protagonists beyond messenger RNA are also observed. In this case it is the quick diagnostic lollipop and the smart scalpels that allow tumors to be identified in tissue samples.

It is true that Spain presents itself as a world reference in the medical field, but experts insist on exploiting these opportunities that will allow “reducing hospital pressure”, as well as improve personalized services. Matter that “without a doubt” marks the future of medicine, García emphasizes.

TEXTILES CONVERTED INTO DEVICES

Spain also has an advantage in the fashion sector, but must maintain it with an eye on the “great advances in microelectronics that allow textiles to become devices,” says García, while emphasizing that it is also necessary “uniting fashion with technological innovation”.

Specifically, and between other types of functionalitiesthere are textiles that are “able to react and transmit information about changes in the body.”

NEW CONSTRUCTIONS

Some textiles that can also be included in the home, since some are conductors of electricity in favor of sustainability, as are also the walls that can become solar panels.

Again, the number of construction and cement companies in Spain is quite high, and it is of great importance to continue innovating in this aspect, since “Spanish architects It will give them that advantage to compete with others.because in design we are very good, but with this added technology, it would put us in another league,” explains García.

Once this technological decalogue has been reviewed and after the little response it had in the first year, as García admits, they want the publication of INTEC becomes “something expected”since for “these initiatives to make sense they have to occur every year and have a long journey” that allows us to look back, but without losing focus on the future.

Furthermore, and due to the importance it has – or at least should have – for the entire society, next year it will be published in book format with the aim of “being in all bookstores so that people can read it and say, ‘Come on, if I didn’t know this’“, Garca says.
