Sustainable gifts are trendy. However, the term can be used to describe many things, and anyone who enters it on the Internet will find almost endless offers: from a pencil that is supposed to grow into a tree to a solar lamp. Such ideas are undoubtedly nice.

But if you are looking for a really sustainably produced gift, you can easily find it if you take a detour from the Frankfurt Christmas market to Buchgasse behind the Römer, for example. There is currently a pop-up store called Einzigware in the Caritas building. Everything sold here by volunteers is made in an upcycling project for the long-term unemployed.

Angel wings and doll kitchen

There are artistic Christmas cards decorated with pages from old hymn books with branches or animals printed on them; Christmas tree balls also have a similar decor. For door decoration, there are wreaths made with strings from ties, which are also used to make lanyards. Old towels have been used for the funny dachshunds with long floppy ears, and former tablecloths and other fabric scraps have been made into angel wings and crowns for children.

Wood scraps are used to make boards in different sizes and shapes for the kitchen or as a writing surface. Spiral notebooks and notebooks are made from leftover paper from printing companies. Safety vests that have been discarded from an airline also find a new purpose here: either as a bright yellow cover for the bicycle saddle or as material for pencil cases, cell phone cases and many other useful bags. Lunch bags and various backpacks and bags made from a wide variety of materials are made from old tarpaulins. All of them are unique, as the material is usually only available in small quantities.

Because the Frankfurt Caritas also runs a clearing service, the small shop also offers refurbished or redesigned old furniture. Including a pretty doll’s kitchen and a shop. So there is plenty of choice for sustainable and inexpensive gifts for the whole family, which have the added value of giving the long-term unemployed a perspective.

Unique pop-up store, Buchgasse 3, Frankfurt, open Wednesday to Friday 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. On the Internet:
