Yotam Haïm, 28 years old, Samer al-Talalqa, 25 years old, and Alon Lulu Shamriz, 26 years old, were kidnapped by Hamas in the attacks on October 7th and killed this week during the Israeli Army’s incursions into the Gaza Strip. Three deaths that occurred “by mistake”, according to the Israeli military, but which are causing consternation in the families of the hostages who are calling for an end to the invasion of the Gaza Strip and the safe return of people still detained by Hamas.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the death of the hostages was an “unbearable tragedy” that plunges the entire country into mourning and stated that “it is necessary to learn all the lessons from this episode”. The White House said it was a “tragic error”.

Demonstrations in Israel led by the families of the hostages continue. They ask that the war stop to give way to negotiations, as they believe that only in this way can the lives of the 129 hostages still held in Gaza be saved.

This incident could give rise to a new period of ceasefire on the ground, with David Barnea, head of the Mossad, and meeting this weekend with the Qatari Prime Minister, Mohammed ben Abdelrahmane Al-Thani.

Qatar has been leading mediation efforts between the two parties, in order to try to extend the periods of truce that also allow humanitarian aid trucks to enter the Gaza Strip, where in addition to thousands of Palestinian deaths, 85% of the population, that is, 1.9 million people, have been displaced from their homes and cities since the start of the war.
