Amazon has backed down days before its planned inauguration and will not finally open what was going to be the multinational’s new logistics center in Spain.

It was expected that the launch of the strategic ‘hive’ in the municipality of La Muela, in Zaragoza, would mean the creation of at least 1,500 jobs. The unexpected decision in extremis not to launch the project was communicated by the company to the workers last week.

The warehouse that was going to house the facility had an area of 140,000 square meters in what was an important commitment by Jeff Bezos’ company to our country as a result of the drastic increase in sales that the platform experienced since COVID. It would have been, in fact, one of the company’s largest warehouses in Aragon. Proof of this is that an entire plant with more than 35,000 square meters had been dedicated exclusively to the management of parcels.

Consumption is precisely the reason that has led Amazon to suspend the expansion of its presence and logistics resources in Spain since they have verified that demand has been experiencing a drop in recent months linked to a general downward trend in consumption.

The fate of the logistics center that will not be will depend on its rental by Amazon to another company after investing around 18 million euros in its construction, as reported by Aragón TV.
