The legendary Australian rock group AC/DC announced on Saturday the death of its first drummer, Colin Burgess, who died at the age of 77.

“We are very sad to learn of the passing of Colin Burgess,” AC/DC wrote on Instagram, X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook, without revealing the cause of death. “He was our first drummer and a very respected musician. Happy memories, Rock in peace Colin,” adds the text.

Colin Burgess was a founding member of the group, best known for its 1979 global hit “Highway to Hell”, alongside original singer Dave Evans, bassist Larry Van Kriedt and guitarist brothers Angus and Malcolm Young.

AC/DC formed in 1973, but Colin Burgess left the band the following year and was replaced by current drummer Phil Rudd.

Colin Burgess also founded the band The Masters Apprentices, which was inducted into the Australian Music Industry Hall of Fame in 1998.
