Water tariffs

Written by Rainer Ackermann

The reform of the water management system will ensure uniform tariffs for all consumers outside of the basic supply from the New Year.

According to the regulation published in the Official Journal, after January 1st, a cubic meter of water will cost a uniform net price of 576 forints (approx. 1.50 euros) for drinking water and 881 forints (2.30 euros) for wastewater. The “basic fee” as the second tariff component can reach up to 610,000 forints per month for drinking water or twice the price for wastewater. Energy Minister Csaba Lantos had previously announced that he would put an end to the tariff jungle with more than 900 local offer prices and price differences of up to 50 times (!). In addition, after ten years of policy of reduced additional costs, the Orbán government has realized that the water industry is missing gigantic billions of dollars to modernize the infrastructure. A fund is now being formed into which eight regional water suppliers will from now on pay contributions, which will be divided among 29 other waterworks. The water tariffs for the population (which also vary drastically from region to region) remain unaffected by these changes.
