By playing too much with the dynamism of the immigration debate, the executive has precipitated a resounding political crash with incalculable consequences. Drawing lessons from this fiasco requires us to stop considering “immigration” as an object of political display, a big catch-all where, following the extreme right, we mix vast questions, certainly linked, but very distinct. Some are of a political and social nature – the shortage of social housing and the ghettoization of working-class neighborhoods, police abuses, discrimination and violence among young people. On these essential subjects which should be carried by government heavyweights, there is neither a major presidential speech nor a battle in Parliament.
