Billie Eilish Shines in Season’s Last “Saturday Night Live” Performance

The last “Saturday Night Live” of the year is always a special occasion, and 2023 was no exception, as Billie Eilish took the stage for two unforgettable performances. Eilish wowed the audience with the television debut of “What Was I Made For?,” a song she wrote and recorded for Greta Gerwig’s summer blockbuster film “Barbie.” She also delivered a torchy interpretation of the holiday classic “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”

Eilish’s performance showcased her rapidly growing range as a singer, bringing a deep yearning to the first song and a sultry jazz flavor to the second. The young artist displayed a depth and nuance that had only been hinted at earlier in her career.

“What Was I Made For?” was introduced by Gerwig, who appeared on stage alongside host and “Barbie” costar Kate McKinnon. Eilish appeared in a simple pink polo shirt, jeans, and silver-lame hightop sneakers for the performance. The backdrop paid homage to the film’s powerful montage scene and featured childhood home-movie clips and personal photos from Eilish, as well as past and present “Saturday Night Live” cast members.

For her rendition of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” Eilish was joined by her brother and collaborator Finneas, as well as jazz bassist Christian McBride and a six-piece string ensemble. As the song came to a close, faux snow fell on the stage, creating a magical holiday atmosphere.

“What Was I Made For?” has been nominated for five Grammy Awards, including song of the year and record of the year, as well as a Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award. An Oscar nomination also seems likely. Eilish, Finneas, and the song were honored at Variety’s 2023 Hitmakers ceremony, where they received the film song of the year award.

Fans can watch Finneas describe the song’s creation on Variety’s video series, “Behind the Song.” Overall, Eilish’s performance on the season’s last “Saturday Night Live” was a fitting end to a successful year for the talented artist.
