Batticaloa monk accuses Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam of trying to create Sinhalese-Tamil hatred

Ambitiya Sumanarathna Thera has accused Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam of attempting to create hatred between Sinhalese and Tamil people during a media conference held at Keviliamadu Vihara in Batticaloa.

The monk claimed that Ponnambalam’s visit to Keviliamadu village in Batticaloa led to protests from the local people. He also alleged that Member of Parliament of the Tamil National Federation, I. Chanakyan, is also against the farming practices of the Sinhalese people in Divlabothanai village.

Sumanarathna Thera emphasized the demand for Tamil people to provide agricultural lands for cattle grazing, raising concerns about the livelihood of the Sinhalese people who have been farming in the area for many years.

He further accused Ponnambalam of attempting to create racism and division between the Sinhalese and Tamil people in Batticaloa, despite claiming to have supported the Tamil people in the past.

The monk also criticized other Tamil parliamentarians for allegedly disrupting national unity in the North East and demanded that the Sri Lankan government take action to prevent such activities during the current crisis in the country.

Sumanarathna Thera’s statements have sparked controversy and raised concerns about the potential impact on the already fragile relationship between Sinhalese and Tamil communities in the region.
