The device is white, it looks exactly like a classic electric radiator. Except that inside is hidden, not resistors, but indeed a computer such as one finds in data centers. But is it as effective for heating? “When a computer consumes 1,000 watts of electricity, it will release 1,000 watts of heat. This is strictly what a classic radiator does, there is no energy loss,” assures Alexandre Vinot, co-founder of the Nantes start-up Hestiia.

Usually, these computers are found by the thousands in data centers and produce so-called “fatal” heat that must be eliminated. “This heat is very rarely used while people pay to heat themselves with electricity. Thanks to our computer radiators, we kill two birds with one stone. »

For 1 euro spent, 18 cents recovered

The radiators, sold for 990 euros, are connected to electricity but also to the homes’ Internet network via wifi. When turned on, they perform calculations on behalf of companies who, in return, pay for this service. These calculations heat up the machine and the loop is closed.

Hestiia serves as an intermediary between companies and individuals and pays back the equivalent of 18% of the electricity consumption of each radiator installed. In other words, for 1 euro of heating spent, 18 cents are given back to the owner.

“For the user, it’s totally transparent, it must be magical,” praises Alexandre Vinot. Especially since this heating can be controlled from your smartphone. » This technology did not exist. It is therefore Hestiia which developed its own machines.

The radiators are assembled in Nantes (Loire-Atlantique). Two hundred devices will be sold this winter and 1,000 next year. Then, the company hopes to sell tens of thousands in the next five years.
