India’s Bharat New Car Safety Assessment Program (BNCAP) Set to Launch on December 20

After much anticipation, it has been officially confirmed that India’s exclusive car crash test system, Bharat New Car Safety Assessment Program (BNCAP), will kick off on December 20. This program will mark a significant milestone for the Indian automotive industry, as it will be the first time that locally made cars will undergo their own safety assessments.

While Indian-made cars have traditionally met international NCAP standards, the introduction of BNCAP will provide a more comprehensive and specific evaluation tailored to the Indian market.

The Bharat New Car Evaluation Program, originally scheduled to commence on October 1, has been pushed back to December 20 to coincide with the post-festive season. The delay in the launch has allowed for more thorough preparations to ensure the smooth implementation of the crash testing program.

Over 30 models from various automobile companies, including Tata Punch, Kia Sonet, Hyundai, Mahindra, and Maruti, are set to undergo testing in the Bharat Crash Test for the first time.

The testing process for the Bharat Crash Test will be carried out on vehicles with a capacity of up to 8 passengers and weighing less than 3.5 tonnes. The assessments will be conducted by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) and the International Center for Automotive Technology (ICAT) directly from dealers, if companies voluntarily offer their vehicles for testing.

The comprehensive evaluations will include tests for CNG, electric, and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, such as frontal collision with an offset deformable barrier at 64 km/h, a side impact test conducted at 50 km/h, and a mandatory rear side impact test for vehicles to be rated.

In order to attain a full five-star safety rating, a vehicle must score at least 27 points in adult safety and 41 points in child protection. This stringent evaluation process is expected to raise the safety standards for vehicles in the Indian market and provide consumers with valuable information on the safety features of the cars they are considering purchasing.
