More than 100 people died in China

This Monday (18), a 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit Gansu province, in northwest China, causing devastation and resulting in the deaths of at least 111 people, while another 230 were injured.

The earthquake occurred in the early hours of Monday to Tuesday, leaving a trail of destruction and collapsing houses.

The damage caused by the earthquake led residents to flee to the streets in search of safety. The affected region witnessed several aftershocks after the main tremor, increasing the risk of further collapses and structural damage.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located 100 kilometers southwest of the provincial capital, Lanzhou, affecting parts of Gansu and Qinghai provinces.

Residents of these affected areas face challenging conditions, especially due to a cold wave hitting the region, with temperatures around minus 14 degrees Celsius the morning after the seismic event.

Rescue efforts are ongoing, with authorities activating a Level IV disaster relief emergency. The disaster area is located in a high-altitude region, intensifying challenges for rescue operations and raising concerns about secondary disasters.

Adverse weather conditions are further complicating rescue efforts, with the cold wave encompassing much of China.

Authorities are mobilizing resources to address the logistical challenges posed by weather conditions and to provide effective assistance to victims.

The earthquake in Gansu highlights the vulnerability of regions prone to seismic events and highlights the importance of a rapid and coordinated response to natural disasters, especially when facing adverse weather conditions.

The number of victims could increase as rescue operations progress.
