FC Girona continues to present itself as an absolute title candidate in the Spanish Primera División.
The surprise team from Catalonia easily won 3-0 (2-0) at home against newly promoted Deportivo Alaves at the end of the 17th matchday and maintained their lead in the table with a two-point lead over record champions Real Madrid.
With their 14th win of the season, Girona has already built up a cushion of nine points over FC Barcelona in third place. The goals for the hosts were scored by top Ukrainian striker Artem Dovbyk with a brace (23rd minute/58th) and Portu (42nd) at the Estadio Municipal de Montilivi. (dpa)
