A Chamber of Deputies approved this Monday, 18th, the analysis of the Legislative Decree Project (PDL), on an urgent basis, which aims to waive visas for tourists from Australia, Canada, United States e Japan throughout Brazilian territory. The request was approved by 304 votes in favor to 141 against. With the urgency request, voting is accelerated and can be done in plenary, without necessarily going through thematic committees.

The measure had already been imposed by the former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in 2019, but a decree from the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva requires that, from 2024, visa requirements for Australian, American and Canadian tourists be resumed. In the case of the Japanese, the stay of visitors from the country is already pacified so that there is no visa for up to 90 days, as well as Brazilians can also stay without a visa for up to 90 days in Japan. The proposal is valid until September 2026.

The Lula government’s decision came after a negative response from the four countries to also exempt Brazilians. With this, the president aims to maintain the criteria of reciprocity in Brazil’s diplomacy, in addition to stating that there has been no increase in the number of tourists from these countries.
