JAKARTA – The General Election Commission (KPU) will hold 2024 presidential election debate second round on Friday (22/12/2023) evening. The themes raised in this debate are Economy (both people’s economy, digital economy), Finance, Tax Investment, Trade, APBN-APBD Management, Infrastructure and Urban Affairs.

Constitutional Economist Defiyan Cori said that looking at the educational background and track record of presidential candidates, only presidential candidate number 1 Anies Baswedan has a background in economics. Meanwhile, presidential candidate number 2, Prabowo Subianto, has a military background and owns a business, while presidential candidate number 3, Ganjar Pranowo, has an educational background in the fields of law and police.

Meanwhile, none of the vice presidential candidates (cawapres) have an educational background in economics. Vice Presidential Candidate number 1, Muhaimin Iskandar, his education is in the field of political science; vice presidential candidate number 2 Gibran Rakabuming Raka in the field of science and technology; Meanwhile, vice presidential candidate number 3, Mahfud MD, has an educational background in the legal field.

“Only vice presidential candidate number two is an entrepreneur or business practitioner, and also has experience as a regional head,” said Defiyan in his statement, Tuesday (19/12/2023).

According to him, to find out the views of the three vice presidential candidates on the economic theme, what needs to be explored is what kind of economic system will be offered in the future as an antithesis to the current mainstream world economy.

“It is necessary to explore which direction the Indonesian economy will move in the next 5-10 years in order to be able to achieve the target of a Golden Indonesia 2045. What legal products will be improved so that periodic economic growth achievements can produce economic equality and justice for all Indonesian people,” he said.

Defiyan added that the central theme of people’s economics must also be to dissect the economy from the perspective of building a national and state system referring to the ideology of Pancasila as the basis of the state and the 1945 Constitution as the foundation. The capacity of the three vice presidential candidates in relation to managing the Indonesian economy must be based on article 33 of the 1945 Constitution.

“The three pairs of candidates for President and Vice President must answer and convey valid and factual data and information,” he said.
