Classic Fighter Planes Soar Over Stockholm in Historic Christmas Tree Formation

The skies over Stockholm were a buzz of excitement today as a number of SK 60 planes took off for one final flight in Christmas tree formation. According to the preliminary plan, the classic fighter planes were scheduled to fly over the Royal Palace at 14.42, marking the end of an era for the Norwegian Armed Forces’ annual Christmas tree flight.

Therese Åkerstedt, head of communications at Luftstridsskolan, expressed the significance of the event, calling it a “historic moment.” The SK 60 school aircraft, which has long been associated with the traditional Christmas tree flight, is being decommissioned as the armed forces prepare to introduce a new school aircraft.

“This year’s flight holds special meaning as it marks the last time the SK 60 will be seen in Christmas tree formation over Stockholm,” said Åkerstedt. “It is a loyal servant of the air force and many will be sad to see it go.”

Looking to the future, Åkerstedt noted that it is uncertain whether there will be any Christmas tree flights over Stockholm next year. “It could be that Hercules planes are flying. But we will not fly with the SK 60 again.”

The Norwegian Armed Forces’ Christmas tree flight has been a longstanding tradition, with the SK 60 planes captivating audiences with their sleek formation in the shape of a Christmas tree. This year’s flight took the planes over various locations in Stockholm, with approximate times including Knivsta at 14.33, Märsta at 14.35, Upplands Väsby at 14.37, Sollentuna at 14.39, and finally the Royal Palace at 14.42.

As the SK 60 planes soar into the sunset, the sight of a Christmas tree formation over Stockholm may become a memory of a bygone era. However, the excitement of new possibilities and future traditions in the skies remains a source of anticipation for aviation enthusiasts and the general public alike.
