This 2023 marks the first centenary of The Walt Disney Companytaking as reference the date of founding of the company Disney Brothers Cartoon Studioon October 16, 1923, by the brothers Roy y Walt Disney. Known, above all, and beyond superheroes and other franchises, for being the leading company in the field of animation in the West, anyone would think that its animation premiere this season, its new classic, would be a commitment to everything high, seeking to do justice to milestones in the history of the seventh art such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, Bambi, Beauty and the Beast o The Lion King. Well no.
THE ISLAND OF WISHES
Wish. The Power of Wishes brings together all the basic components of a movie Disney. Medieval setting, magic, an idealistic young woman, a king who keeps looking in the mirror, talking animals, wishing stars, songs and an excellent animated film. The film, stylistically, follows the line set by Disney’s two recent great hits, Tangled y Frozen. Added to this are multiple nods to classic titles from throughout the company’s history.
In the direction we have Chris Buckresponsible of Tarzan or the two deliveries of Frozen. In the script Jennifer Leewho has led this new stage of animation studios, and in the recasting of star voices such as Ariana DeBose o Chris Pine. The film touches on the classic themes of Disney cinema, has a wide repertoire of songs and has just the right length, 95 minutes. At first glance, no one could accuse the film of being a bad production.
THE ISLAND OF GAMES
Indeed, care and attention is appreciated for all these elements, however, the result is not elevated. Perhaps it is because everything in the story and the characters screams deja vu, that the plot is not only hackneyed, but lacks development, that the secondary characters lack depth and charisma; but the truth is that, without being a bad movie, everything in Wish. The Power of Wishes It turns out to be insipid, inconsequential, repeated. Its great values do not compensate for the tiredness that the film oozes. Just like that warning that the company itself gave us in Pinocchiothe film reminds us of the island of games, where everything seems pretty and fun, dazzling the eyes of children, but, when you want to realize it, you discover that they have taken you for a donkey, selling you a poorly cooked refried food.
THE ISLAND OF TOMORROW
In other circumstances, Wish. The Power of Wishes It would remain a correct but routine film, a time-killer of the Disney to take the children to the movies and save the Saturday or Sunday afternoon. But not in November 2023. The factory of dreams, the company that made animated cinema its seal, should not commemorate its centenary with something so insubstantial and anodyne. A legacy of 100 years cannot be settled with such mediocrity. Seriously, no one in the Disney Did you stop to think about this before releasing this trifle?
