The Armament Dock Port of Seville (Spain) has witnessed the beginning of the journey of an impressive megastructure: an electrical substation for an offshore wind farm off the coast of Virginia (United States).
This monumental infrastructure, manufactured by Tecade in the Astilleros Industrial Estate, it has notable dimensions, reaching 25 meters in height, 65 meters in length and a weight that exceeds 2,300 tons.
The megastructure left the Sevillian enclave in the early hours of the morning and will be transported on a barge propelled by a tugboat to the Danish port of Aalborg. There, the final installation of the equipment will take place before its final destination, the offshore wind farm located 24 miles offshore on the Atlantic coast of the United States.
The operation was coordinated by various entities, including the Port Authority of Seville, the Maritime Captaincy, the Pilot Corporation of the Port of Seville and the Guadalquivir Estuary, Tugs, Moorings, Tecade, Bladt Industries and Sevitrade.
Manufacturing Process and Wind Project
In November 2022, Tecade began manufacturing two offshore wind substations for Danish company Bladt Industries’ Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project. The first substation, with more than 500,000 hours of work, has been completed, while the second is at 50% production.
The manufacturing process takes place between the Los Molares and Tecade Yard facilities in the port, with final assembly at the docks of the port of Seville. In total, these jobs will involve nearly one million hours of work.
Renewable Energy Generation and Wind Farm Schedule
For its part, the wind park will generate 2.6 gigawatts of renewable energy through 176 turbines. Built and operated by Dominion Energy, it is expected to be completed in 2026, providing clean energy to approximately 660,000 homes. Tecade will supply two of the three transformation substations planned to connect the generated energy to the terrestrial grid.
