Fans of the Narnia and Lord of the Rings sagas will be able to consult manuscripts and other archives of the two British authors in Oxford.

Fans of CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien will rejoice. As reported The Guardianseveral manuscripts and books belonging to the two British authors will be made available to the public in 2023 in the United Kingdom.

Together while studying at Oxford University, the writers who wrote two of the most popular fantasy universes in literary history – Narnia and The Lord of the Rings – were close friends. Some of their correspondence will be exhibited to the public for the first time at the Story Museum and the Bodleian Library in Oxford.

Among these archives, Narnia fans will also be able to consult the personal copy of Prince Caspian by CS Lewis, the rare work Spirits in Bondage, written under his pseudonym Clive Hamilton, or even a notebook relating to Boxen, a fictional world that the author created in his childhood, before Narnia.

Certain Tolkien manuscripts such as the collection of poems The Adventures of Tom Bombadil will also be accessible.

Archives of a literary critic

These archives are part of the family collection of literary critic Walter Hooper. They were donated to the nation under the Acceptance in Lieu and Cultural Gifts Scheme.

According to the Guardian, the “Acceptance in Lieu” program allows people to settle their inheritance rights by transferring important cultural, scientific or historical objects to the nation.

The “Cultural Gifts Scheme” program offers British taxpayers the opportunity to donate works to public museums, galleries and libraries in exchange for a tax reduction.
