The legal proceedings that Trump has on his hands have so far been primarily a political risk for him. A conviction before Election Day could cost him crucial votes. The ruling by the Supreme Court in Colorado is now an even greater threat to his desired re-election: If it ends up before the Supreme Court in Washington and is upheld, then it could happen that he will not be able to run in other states that are crucial to the election outcome.
New territory for the judiciary
Whether this happens involves many difficult legal questions that are largely new territory for the American judiciary. Although Trump appointed three of the judges in Washington, he cannot be sure how the matter would turn out. The court has repeatedly failed to attempt to challenge the 2020 election.
America has lost the middle consensus not only on election issues, which is why judges now have to decide Trump’s (political) fate. In a constitutional state, that is at least the right place when it comes to interpreting the constitution. The Congress, dominated by partisan politics, has failed in this task.

However, the issues and feelings that Trump continues to stir up today would not disappear with the removal of his name from the ballot. The America that Europe could rely on during the Cold War no longer exists.
