The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has announced a boycott of the general elections slated to be held in Bangladesh in January. The move comes as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gears up for her fourth consecutive term in office, amidst ongoing protests and political turmoil.

The BNP, the main opposition party in Bangladesh, has cited the imprisonment and deportation of many of their top leaders as a reason for their boycott. They have also demanded Hasina’s resignation from the post of Prime Minister and called for a neutral center to take over power.

In response to the boycott, Hasina has rejected calls for her resignation and has blamed the BNP for inciting the anti-government protests that have rocked Dhaka since late October. The unrest has resulted in the death of at least ten people, with tensions escalating in the lead-up to the elections.

Senior Joint Secretary General of the BNP, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, has urged the public to exercise their democratic right and boycott the “dummy election” on January 7. Rizvi also called on government employees involved in organizing elections to resign and suspend all services, including the banking and judicial system.

On the other hand, Prime Minister Hasina has been actively campaigning across the country, urging people to vote for her party and continue working towards a prosperous Bangladesh. She has emphasized the constitutional right to vote and has warned against any interference in the electoral process.

Amidst the political standoff, the BNP has reiterated that it is not involved in any violent attacks. However, four people, including a mother and her three-year-old son, tragically died when a train caught fire on Tuesday.

As the political climate in Bangladesh remains tense, the boycott called by the BNP has further added to the uncertainty surrounding the upcoming elections. The implications of the opposition’s move and the government’s response are yet to unfold as the country prepares to head to the polls.
