Renzo Arbore returns to TV on the day of the seventieth anniversary of the birth of Italian television, January 4, 2024, with an unedited and renewed version of ‘Appresso alla musica: Renzo Arbore’s Premiata musical antique shop’ which will bring him for 20 episodes on Rai2 on Thursday in the late evening and in repeat the following Wednesday in the late evening on Rai5. “I admit it – Arbore tells time.news – it has a certain effect to debut on the anniversary of TV but this will above all be a musical programme, with real gems, sensational, rare meetings, baptisms of young talents who later became icons of music, enlightening comparisons that I was lucky enough to host in my 21 very personal television formats and which fortunately are preserved in that very precious archive that is the Teche Rai”.

The Rai Cultura programme, hosted by Arbore with Gegè Telesforo and written by the two with Ugo Porcelli, will already propose meetings in the first episode with a very young Patty Pravo (in “Speciale per voi”), with Gigi Proietti (in “Caro Totò, ti I want to present”), with Tosca and Tullio De Piscopo (in “Il caso Sanremo”), with La Sorella Bandiera (in “L’Altra Domenica”).

This new edition of “Appresso alla musica” stands out from the previous one (which was very much based on “Doc Musica ad origine controlled”), “precisely because of this attention to rarities – explains Arbore – and to the review of beautiful songs perhaps a little faded in our memory, but which are certainly part of the history of music in our country. This series will also and above all be an opportunity for the new generations to discover how and what their grandparents sang.”

The program is the result of careful restoration and audio remastering work, “since these are materials that are more than 60 years old, but which bear their age very well”, underlines Arbore. Who on the difference between the TV of then and that of today, says: “The TV that was made then was not created only to entertain the public but also to enrich it, to make it aware of things. It was an author’s TV. I have always I tried to do things that could last over time and in fact I have never done either current affairs or imitations. This is why a large part of my TV is evergreen”, he states, listing the list of his programs that have made the history of modern TV: from ‘The other Sunday’ to ‘Cuts, scraps and offal’, from ‘Telepatria International’ to ‘Dear friends near and far’, from ‘Quelli della notte’ to ‘Marisa La Nuit’, from ‘Doc’ to ‘Back all !’, from ‘The Sanremo case’ to ‘The less we are the better off’. But Arbore drew not only from these for his program. Another immense source are the videos of the tours made all over the world with the Italian Orchestra: “Thirty years of musical travels, from 1991 to 2021, with incredible success on the five continents. An adventure born from a intuition that we had with the great Adriano Aragozzini”, says Arbore.

For which 2024 will also be the year of another very important anniversary: the centenary of radio, which began broadcasting in Italy in 1924 (in August of that year the Italian Radio Union was born, to which the State entrusted the concession for radio broadcasts, inaugurated on 6 October). “For the anniversary of the radio I am preparing something else for Rai Storia – reveals Arbore – which we will talk about later. I will also use the material from the six episodes with which I celebrated the 60th anniversary of the radio 40 years ago, with all the protagonists of the origins still alive, from Nunzio Filogamo to Nilla Pizzi, from Alberto Sordi to Claudio Villa, Sandra Mondaini and Raimondo Vianello, the Cetra Quartet…”.

Speaking precisely of improvisation and the relationship with radio and TV, Arbore confesses that he considers only Fiorello his “heir” among today’s TV personalities: “An excellent heir. He too has found a completely personal key and place. And then it comes from music, it improvises. I feel it is very similar to mine and Boncompagni’s ‘school'”, confesses Arbore. Who also has words of great esteem for Amadeus: “I am a great admirer of his, because he is a boy who with modesty, simplicity, great work and a great ear has been able to rejuvenate the Sanremo festival. I also follow him in the evening games, I like it. And I hope that with Sanremo it will continue next year too. It would be a shame if he gave up the festival now. He has found the key to taking it into the future, with courageous choices in the composition of the singing cast”, says Arbore, who at 86 years old does not stop to update. “I have an excellent relationship with the internet. I have my own web TV channel, www.renzoarborechannel.tv, where I sometimes reach a million views, but I also frequent social media, from Instagram to TikTok. In communication, those who stop are lost” , he concludes smiling.
