Mayor László Botka announced in October that he would pay tribute to the city’s two Nobel Prize-winning researchers with a gigantic mural. Work began in November on the firewall of the 17-story tower block in Újszeged, and about a month later, on Thursday, the workers already dismantled the scaffolding. The artwork was handed over by Edvin Mihálik, Újszeged municipal representative.

He said that this is the third large-scale mural in the district. The series began with the Sünis heating plant, then the muse of Szeged was placed on the firewall of the studio apartments in Székely. The wall of the city’s tallest building is now decorated with portraits of Katalin Karikó and Albert Szent-Györgyi.
This is a 64-meter-high tower block, and the IKV cleared an area of six hundred square meters so that the creation could be realized. This work was created by mixing 25 colors from 165 liters of paint

He also reported that the municipality has implemented several improvements in the building in recent years, the elevators were replaced, the entire painting was done, the energy system and the police station on the ground floor were also renovated. In addition, several of the recently handed over and renovated social rental apartments are located in this building, and their newest residents can move in by Christmas.
The portrait of the Nobel Prize-winning biochemists was created by graphic designer Erik Fuchs, and painted on the firewall of the tower block in Újszeged by eight artists from the Colorful City Group. Péter Flór, the group’s general secretary, said that in the capital’s 8th district they had already created works at a similar height, where they had painted a scene from the Vuk and Macskafogó cartoons.
