New Delhi: The Wrestling Association of India has been in turmoil as the selection of Brij Bhushan supporter Sanjay Singh as the new president has led to protests and resignations within the association. The selection comes after BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh, the former president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), was embroiled in a sex complaint, leading to protests from top wrestling stars Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia, and others.

The association was then managed by an ad hoc committee and the election of administrators was not held within the stipulated period. As a result, the International Unified Wrestling Federation (WWW) banned the Indian Wrestling Federation, preventing Indian stars from competing in several series including the World Wrestling Championships.

After various hiccups, the elections were finally held for the Wrestling Association of India, with Brij Bhushan’s supporter Sanjay Singh winning by securing 40 votes. This has led to the resignation of wrestling star Sakshi Malik, who tearfully announced her retirement from wrestling in protest at the selection of Sanjay Singh as the new president.

Meanwhile, newly elected president Sanjay Singh has expressed hope that the ban on the Wrestling Association of India may soon be lifted, bringing relief to the wrestling stars who have been unable to compete under the national flag. He has also stated that his victory is the victory of thousands of wrestling stars in the nation who have been suffering for the past 7-8 months.

The resignation of Sakshi Malik and the controversial election of the new president have created a wave of unrest within the Wrestling Association of India. It remains to be seen how the new administration will work to address the challenges and concerns of the wrestling community in India.
