Seeing and verifying the successful trajectory of Unilab graduates is, certainly, indisputable proof of the institutional commitment of this University with its mission of “training human resources to contribute to the integration between Brazil and the other member countries of the Community of Speaking Countries Portuguese (CPLP), especially African countries, as well as promoting regional development and cultural, scientific and educational exchange. Thus, another page of this beautiful story is written with the participation of Guinean graduate Sanhá João Correia, linked to the Project Strengthening Teaching, Research and Extension for Sovereignty and Food and Nutritional Security at CPLP and Unilab (Consan), as a guest and Presenter at the XII Brazilian Congress of Agroecology.

Sanhá Correia, who is an agronomist trained in the Agronomy course at Unilab and current operational coordinator of the activities of the NGO Tiniguena in Marine Protected Areas in Guinea-Bissau, was present at the XII Brazilian Congress of Agroecology (CBA), held in Rio de Janeiro, with the work “Protection of biodiversity in the face of the challenges of climate-resilient family farming on the Urok Islands”.

One of the objectives of its work is to increase the adaptation capacity of family farming on the Urok Islands to face the challenges of climate change and guarantee food security, the economic income of farmers, and the environmental sustainability of agrogeological-based family farming systems.

Furthermore, Correia, who also participated as a speaker in the working group on “Traditional Peoples Ancestralities and Territories”, thanked the support received from this university: “For me to get to the congress I had the support of Unilab, through the food sovereignty project and nutritional, which is coordinated by professor Jacqueline (Santos)”.

He then gave more details about his research: “the work [apresentado] it dealt with the protection of biodiversity in the face of climate change in the Bijagós archipelago. As we know, in recent years, climate change has been evident almost everywhere in the world, but in our case, working on these islands, in conservation areas, we realized that the people most vulnerable to these changes are the people who live on the Bijagós islands. And among these people there is the issue of women who are also much more vulnerable to these issues. For example, here in Guinea it is very common in the countryside to see a woman wake up first in the morning and start working and work almost all day compared to men. It was, therefore, from this perspective that I wrote this work for the congress, to explain a little of our research not only in terms of biodiversity conservation, but also in terms of agriculture, in terms of local development itself”.

The research environment

The Bijagós Archipelago is characterized by emblematic and endangered species.

It is the second most important place for migratory birds. It is the first nesting site for green turtles in Africa. Last refuge for endangered fish

The cultural dimension and the conservation of natural resources are the pillars that support the participatory governance process of the AMPC of the Urok Islands, in Guinea-Bissau.
