Gas station near Detroit Metro Airport issued cease and desist letter for reportedly overcharging customers

The Michigan Department of Attorney General has taken action against a gas station near Detroit Metro Airport after receiving consumer complaints that the station was overcharging customers by nearly $2 per gallon.

The BP gas station, located at 9201 Middlebelt Road in Romulus, reportedly charged $1.50 or more per gallon compared to most nearby competitors, prompting the AG’s office to issue a cease and desist letter.

In response to the allegations, the owner of the gas station, Marvin Hadir, defended his pricing, stating that gas prices are regulated by supply and demand and that consumers have the right to shop around for their goods and services.

However, the AG’s office emphasized that the excessive pricing is unacceptable, especially during the holiday season when many people are traveling to spend time with friends and family.

The gas station has until January 8, 2024, to respond to the notice. Attorney General Dana Nessel expressed hope that the gas station will take the notice seriously and that further action will not be necessary.

Hadir stated that he tried to contact the AG’s office to resolve the issue, but has not received a response. He also denied the allegations of price gouging, stating that the premium on gas prices near the airport is justified.

The AG’s office has urged the gas station to provide additional information justifying their prices and emphasized that the location of the gas station alone is not a satisfactory justification for the excessive pricing.

As the investigation continues, the Attorney General’s office remains ready to investigate reports of businesses that attempt to take advantage of residents, especially during the holiday season.
