Domenico Diele among the protagonists of La luce nella masseria, the TV-movie that celebrates 70 years since the birth of television programmes, broadcast on Rai 1 on 7 January in prime time. The Sienese actor, who plays the role of Vincenzo, actually caused a tragic event: on 24 June 2017, while driving under the influence of drugs, he was responsible for a road accident, killing a woman who was on board the his scooter. After being in prison until 2022, he was then entrusted to public social services and this year he was able to return to the set playing a role which, even in stage fiction, has a dramatic aspect.
I am grateful, from the bottom of my heart, to be able to work, but sorry: I cannot answer your questions about my personal situation, Diele specified during the press conference. And Luca Barbareschi who, with liseo Entertainment, produces the fiction in collaboration with Rai Fiction, directed by Riccardo Donna and Tiziana Aristarco, is keen to underline: Domenico, after a period of sentence, had permission and there was no no problem. I wanted him because he was the right actor for the character. An extraordinary interpreter, a man who suffered and was reborn. I am happy to have given him, with Rai, this opportunity. He knew how to use his life baggage to serve the role.
The story is that of a peasant family from Southern Italy, which is intertwined with the history of the birth of television, told through the eyes of a child. On 3 January 1954, Rai inaugurated the broadcasting service throughout the national territory. The Rondinone family works the land hard on their large farm near Matera and, suddenly, discovers the magic of the small screen. We are in the early ’60s and not everyone can afford to buy the TVV, that is, the magnetic instrument that allows you to be transported into another world, made up of information, shows, dramas, films… And, for the less well-off, it was born the custom of gathering in public places, to watch all together, in front of a single television, a real event: a collective experience.
The plot unfolds against the backdrop of an Italy that deals with poverty and the consequent emigration, intersecting the private and public events of the Matera family, entrusting them to the attentive gaze of little Pinuccio (Giovanni Limite), who is the narrator. An enterprising eleven-year-old, enchanted by the news in the media, but also by the modern attitude of his favorite uncle, Vincenzo, who he considers his hero: a handsome boy passionate about photography, fought over by two women, but who unfortunately soon finds himself in a wheelchair. , suffering from multiple sclerosis. For him the sun suddenly goes out – continues Diele – But he will have to find a way to react and, despite the disabling illness, he will be the link with the past, projecting himself into the future. Limite adds, with mature wisdom: Pain must be faced, because it makes you grow.
Among the other protagonists, Renato Carpentieri grandfather Eustachio, patriarch of the Rondinone family; Aurora Ruffino Imma, the young nurse who will start her love affair with Vincenzo; and also Giusy Frallonardo, and Carlo De Ruggieri. a beautiful Christmas tale – concludes Maria Pia Ammirati, director of Rai Fiction – remembering how we have been and what we will probably no longer be.
