In Michel Houellebecq’s 2019 novel “Serotonin”, it is the plummeting milk prices caused by cheap imports that threaten to wipe out the long-established farmers in Normandy. The first-person narrator, a typical, broken, depressive, misogynist, but also Cynical and funny Houellebecq figurevisits Aymeric, his old college friend from the agricultural college.
While the narrator went into administration and struggled with protected names for regional cheeses in the Ministry of Agriculture, Aymeric continued his family’s lush land holdings as an organic farmer who looked after his stock of noble Norman cattle with a lot of love and even more hard work maintains.
