Christmas Celebrations at St. Mary’s Canaan Catholic Parish

The St. Mary’s Canaan Catholic Parish in Morton Grove, New York, celebrated Christmas with a festive array of events organized by the catechism school “Gloria 23.” The celebrations took place on Sunday, December 17, with a variety of activities that brought joy and merriment to parishioners.

The day began with a Holy Mass at 10 a.m., officiated by Fr. James Cheruville, with Parish Vicar Fr. Joshi Valiyaveetil serving as collaborators. The children of the Cherupushpa Mission League played a central role as ministers at the Holy Sacrifice.

Following the mass, a Bible handwriting competition was organized by the CML children, with the winners selected through a lucky draw and prizes distributed to the talented participants. Special gifts were also given to the children of the Child Wood Ministry, spreading Christmas cheer and goodwill to all.

Father Christmas made a special appearance at the catechism school, visiting each class and joining the children in singing carols. This heartwarming gesture served as a message of love and joy for the young students. The celebrations continued with a lively Christmas rally from the school to the church, as many parishioners, teachers, and children took part in the procession, showcasing their dance steps with tala melas.

Inside the Parish Hall, the S. Mary’s Choir team led a captivating carol music program, enhancing the festive atmosphere with beautiful melodies and harmonies. The Christmas celebrations were further elevated by the enchanting Shinkari Melam performed by the children’s mothers, making the event truly special and memorable.

As the day drew to a close, snack packets were distributed to all the children who participated in the program, ensuring that everyone went home with a delightful treat. The Christmas celebration programs held in both the school and the church were coordinated and led by the dedicated catechism teachers, parish executive, and sisters.

Overall, the Christmas celebrations at St. Mary’s Canaan Catholic Parish were a resounding success, bringing together the community in a joyous and festive spirit, and creating lasting memories for all who participated in the event.
