Deaf Olympics gold medalist in wrestling Virender Singh has announced that he will be returning the Padma Shri award to the central government. This decision comes in light of the election of a confidant of BJP MP Brijbhushan Sharan Singh, who is accused in a sexual assault case, as the president of the National Wrestling Federation.

Joining the protest against this controversial election, Virender Singh has decided to return the prestigious award, following in the footsteps of fellow wrestlers Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia. Virender has also called upon legendary players Sachin Tendulkar and Neeraj Chopra to clarify their position on the matter through social media.

Virender Singh is a two-time gold medalist in the Deaf Olympics, having won in the 2005 Melbourne Deaf Olympics and the 2013 Bulgarian Deaf Olympics. He was honored with the Padma Shri in 2021 and has also received the Arjuna Award for his contribution to sports.

Despite the growing protest from prominent athletes, Union Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur has refused to comment on the matter. The decision to return such prestigious awards by these athletes reflects a strong stand against the controversial election and demands for transparency and accountability in sports administration.
