The CPF suspends Niger from the Francophonie authorities

The Permanent Council of La Francophonie (CPF) suspends Niger from the Francophonie Bodies and asks the Secretary General to continue close and constructive monitoring of the situation in the country.

The Secretary General of La Francophonie, Ms. Louise Mushikiwabo, convened this December 19, 2023, by videoconference, the Permanent Council of La Francophonie (CPF) in an extraordinary session to examine the situation in the Republic of Niger. This meeting follows the coup perpetrated on July 26, 2023 by elements of the defense and security forces, united within the National Council for the Preservation of the Party (CNSP).

Adopting a resolution in accordance with the provisions of chapter 5 of the Bamako Declaration, the CPF pronounced the suspension of the Republic of Niger from La Francophonie, with the immediate effects of suspending the participation of its de facto representatives in meetings of the Bodies of the Francophonie. Francophonie as well as the suspension of French-speaking multilateral cooperation with this Member State, with the exception of programs directly benefiting civilian populations, and those contributing to the restoration of democracy.

The CPF called for the immediate and unconditional release of President Mohamed BAZOUM, members of his family as well as those of his Government also sequestered. It demands the rapid restoration of constitutional order and democracy in Niger and calls on the transitional authorities to establish a timetable for exiting the transition with a limited duration.

The CPF underlined the importance of the OIF working alongside national actors, in consultation with regional and international partners in favor of a rapid return to constitutional order and the restoration of democracy in Niger, including in through the ongoing efforts of the ECOWAS Committee of Heads of State.

In continuation of the work undertaken in recent months, in particular the Ministerial Conference of La Francophonie (CMF) held on November 4 and 5, 2023 in Yaoundé, the CPF asked the Secretary General to actively continue close and constructive monitoring of the situation in Niger and decided to remain seized of the situation in this country, so as to re-examine its position at subsequent sessions.

The OIF has 88 states and governments: 54 members, 7 associate members and 27 observers.
