He Port of Cartagena (Spain) has plans to inaugurate a new live cattle terminal at the end of 2024. The administrative concession to operate this terminal has been granted to Terminal Ganadera del Mediterráneo, a company controlled by Agencia Marítima Blázquez and Bovisa.

The location of the terminal will be at the Príncipe Felipe dock in Escombreras, after an investment of 9.7 million euros made by the Port Authority to expand the dock. The infrastructure, with an area of approximately 6,000 m², will comply with European animal welfare regulations. It will include 3,000 m² pens with capacity for up to 7,000 lambs.

The news was announced by the Board of Directors of the Port Authority of Cartagena in its last meeting of the year 2023. They highlighted the port’s role as a leader in the export of live cattle in Europe and emphasized that this expansion is part of the diversification strategy and opening to new markets.

The traffic of live cattle in the port of Cartagena has been consolidated since 2010, being one of the first Spanish ports to obtain authorization to ship live cattle. During the pandemic, this traffic played a fundamental role in providing an outlet for the surplus produced due to the closure of the restaurant.

Apart from this project, the Port of Cartagena has announced the implementation of improvements in access control to the multipurpose terminal of the Escombreras dock, located in the Andalusian enclave.
