Where it is celebrated, Christmas, like no other date on the calendar, is a symbol of the fact that you can be quite sure what to expect – and what others expect. Some expectations regarding the holiday season remain general, for example that there will be days on which almost no one works and hardly anyone can be reached for professional questions. If you still find yourself in the embarrassment of being dependent on someone, you anticipate that you might be inconvenient. Organizations must make provisions for possible emergencies just as individuals must make provisions for sufficient food on the holidays.
The general expectations also include that Christmas is celebrated with the family. This means that a decision has been made which, for some people, does not promise unadulterated enjoyment. The situation is made more complicated by the fact that the family is also confronted with expectations that are sometimes quite specific, but by no means harmonious.
