Ministry of Public Health Warns of Influenza Outbreak in Thailand

The Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) has issued a warning about an influenza outbreak in Thailand, urging at-risk groups to be especially cautious as the cold weather contributes to the spread of the virus. Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, Permanent Secretary of the MOPH, revealed that between November 19 and December 16, 2023, there was a 42% increase in the number of people infected with the influenza virus.

Samples collected from respiratory systems of patients at 14 network hospitals revealed a high proportion of influenza virus, followed by rhinovirus/enterovirus, hMPV, RSV, and COVID-19. Notably, the influenza virus resulted in severe symptoms, particularly in young children and the elderly, with the highest number of cases in children under 5 years of age, followed by those aged 5-17 and over 65 years.

Dr. Opas emphasized the increased risk during the cold weather, as the virus tends to stay in the environment longer and spreads more easily. As a result, the public is advised to take precautions by maintaining personal hygiene, keeping warm, wearing masks when experiencing respiratory symptoms, and avoiding large crowds.

Additionally, individuals are urged to wash their hands frequently with soap and water or alcohol gel, and to monitor symptoms closely, seeking prompt medical attention if symptoms do not improve with initial treatment.

The MOPH’s warning serves as a reminder for the public, especially vulnerable groups, to take preventative measures during this flu season. It is crucial to stay vigilant and prioritize health and safety in order to minimize the impact of the influenza outbreak.]
