The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has congratulated the Spanish troops deployed abroad on Christmas. He has highlighted the “colossal, formidable effort” of the Spanish Armed Forces to defend “the commitment of our country, of Spain, to world peace.

This was indicated during a videoconference with the Spanish units in humanitarian and peace missions abroad, together with the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, and the chief of the Defense Staff (Jemad), Admiral General Teodoro Esteban López Calderon. The President of the Government expressed “on behalf of the entire Spanish society, our gratitude for the work you carry out outside our borders, for the sake of that common desire that we all have, which is global stability and peace.”

“A few days ago we celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the professionalism, the dedication with which you defend those principles and those values, the courageous attitude with which you face the challenges that arise in the fulfillment of your missions, are For all Spaniards, it is a source of pride and I have to tell you that it is also a source of admiration,” he stressed.

Sánchez also recalled the “numerous conflicts” that from Europe “in a very important way affect the daily life” of Spaniards in reference to the war in Ukraine. “Spain, evidently, has come to the demand for peace that is materialized in your efforts in different missions to protect the European and Euro-Atlantic space,” he noted. He also referred to the attack perpetrated by Hamas and the response of the Israeli Government “which is causing unbearable, unacceptable suffering among the civilian population,” he maintained, calling at the same time for the International Community to stop it “immediately.”

More than 12,000 soldiers deployed abroad in 2023

In this sense, he highlighted the value of the 3,000 men and women abroad, their “selflessness and good work” that underlines “Spain’s commitment to world peace.” “You make that commitment real as the United Nations, the European Union and NATO always remind us,” she said.

“In the year 2023 alone, more than 12,054 soldiers from the Armed Forces and also from the Civil Guard have deployed outside our borders and in that sense I want to express my gratitude to the Defense Staff, the Operations Command and the Defense Center.
