Munich is currently battling a flu epidemic, with one in ten patients experiencing heart-related complications as a result. The German Heart Foundation is urging residents to get vaccinated in order to protect themselves from the potentially severe consequences of the flu virus.

Professor Thomas Voigtländer, chairman of the board of the German Heart Foundation, emphasized the need for individuals with cardiovascular disease to be vaccinated against both the influenza virus and pneumococci, the main pathogens that cause pneumonia. He also stressed the importance of pneumococcal vaccination for individuals aged 60 and over, as well as those with underlying health conditions.
While the optimal period for flu vaccination has passed, the German Heart Foundation still recommends vaccination for elderly people, those with underlying health risks, pregnant women, medical staff, and employees working in high-traffic public facilities. The organization also advises that the flu vaccination needs to be repeated annually due to the constant changes in flu viruses, and recommends quadruple vaccination for improved protection.
For individuals with existing heart conditions, the risk of serious illness or subsequent infection is significantly increased, making it crucial for them to take extra precautions to protect themselves from the flu. The Heart Foundation also provides information on hygiene measures, such as hand washing, to reduce the risk of infection.
