Yoshiyuki Tomino He is a legend in the world of anime, and even more so for being the creator of the legendary ‘Gundam’ franchise. The director and animator has been in the industry for more than forty years (and is still involved in Sunrise), so you’ve seen everything that’s changed in recent years.

In an interview with Japan’s Toyo Keizai newspaper, Tomino reflected on the anime industry, which is currently experiencing a new golden age that may not have much left.

With an eye on the mistakes to avoid

According to the creator of ‘Gundam’, despite the flaws it continues to have, The anime industry has improved a lot since he started working. Especially because of how Japanese animated series and movies are much more appreciated.

“In the past, I had a very closed view of the world. I have been freelance in this industry for over forty years, worrying about my mortgage. I remember going to pay my annual taxes, and every time I went to the tax office I had to explain to the staff my job in the animation business,” Tomino recalled. “But now, they don’t laugh at me in the office. With this perspective, I am very grateful for the social status that has been achieved in the industry.”

And no matter how much things have improved, because as Tomino says, it’s no longer “strange” to dedicate yourself to drawing and now the anime industry is one of the fastest growing ones… It’s a bubble that will burst at some pointas has happened with other media.

“The animation industry is certainly in a very prosperous period. But it is not certain that this situation will be sustained in the future. Perhaps the boom will continue for another five or six years, but after that it will go down.”

According to the creator of ‘Gundam’, the industry will continue to grow for a few years, but then it will inevitably begin to fall. Tomino also commented that “the anime boom is at its highest peak” and is going through a new golden age thanks to social networks and technology, although he also compares the possible future of the industry with the decreasing impact that (in his opinion) Disney releases have.

Tomino sees Disney as an example of what could happen in the anime industry, since according to the animator the extreme digitalization of the studio (especially when switching to CGI), has led to his latest films being “boring and depressing”, and that they focus more on blockbusters without substance.

But what does Tomino know for sure about the future of anime? That Hayao Miyazaki’s films will continue to be appreciated as great classics. Not everything looks so black.
