Shortly before Christmas, the whole of Germany has a cold, Corona has again taken the lead in respiratory diseases. Although we are surviving infections well at the moment, no one wants to get infected.

However, the danger is great at the family celebration under the tree, when many people come together, sing together and hug each other. Am I a spoilsport if I play it safe and insist on testing before the festival? “No,” contradicts family doctor and internist Dr. Thomas Assmann.

The doctor recommends: “Testing is definitely advisable!” And describes the problem like this: “Corona currently has a much milder course than before, but is still highly contagious and dangerous for old people and people with previous illnesses.”

Of course you can’t force anyone, but it’s all about mutual consideration. Dr. Aßmann: “Even if only young and healthy people celebrate together, it would be important to test yourself beforehand so that you are not to blame if the others have to start the new year with a Covid infection. But it is absolutely a question of decency to test yourself if the old grandmother or the heart-sick uncle wants to join in the celebration. Because they need to be protected.”

Avoid out of respect

And who should be invited or uninvited in the event of illness? “Christmas often means a lot to old people. If grandma is sick herself, you can catch up with her at Christmas later. Or the family celebration is postponed for a few days. The guests will certainly understand,” says psychologist and neurologist Prof. Borwin Bandelow.

It’s different if a younger, healthy family member has Corona. Dr. Aßmann: “Then of course the person should stay at home so that their grandmother can be there. After all, Christmas is the festival of love – and anyone who is sick should voluntarily give up out of respect for the weaker ones!

“Postponing a celebration or canceling a meeting with loved ones is a difficult decision. But you don’t have to feel guilty if you uninvite guests in this case – health comes first!” says Prof. Bandelow.
