San Salvador. Communities that were once strongholds of gangs and other criminal groups held recreational events this Wednesday, within the framework of the Christmas and New Year’s festivities.

The events, coordinated by the Social Fabric Reconstruction Directorate, are part of the Territorial Control Plan and reinforced by the Exception Regime implemented by the Government of El Salvador to eradicate terrorist groups.

“Today we come, we share a party, toys, cakes, we brought Santa Claus to these places where positive things did not happen before, where the abandonment was notable,” said the director of Tejido Social, Carlos Marroquín, during the celebration in the Zacamil neighborhood. , from Mejicanos, an area liberated after the gangs were dismantled and where violence prevention programs are developed.

These gatherings are held “thinking about the issue of social vulnerability and the entire context of damage that these communities suffered due to abandonment, poverty, exclusion and stigmatization,” said the official.

A similar activity was carried out in parallel at the “Luigui Doze” Urban Center for Welfare and Opportunities (CUBO), in the Santa Lucía neighborhood of Mejicanos, a municipality that in the past was among the areas with the highest crime rates.
