Vinesh Phogat, a prominent wrestler, has announced her decision to return her awards and has penned a letter to the Prime Minister, following in the footsteps of fellow wrestler Bajrang Punia. This comes in the wake of dissatisfaction with the recent elections held for the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), where BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh’s supporters won 13 out of 15 seats.

The wrestling stars Vinesh Phogat, Chakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia have been vocal about their demand for action on sex complaints and fresh elections to the wrestling federation. Their dissatisfaction with the election results led to protests, and eventually, the elections were held as per the assurance of the government.

Sanjay Singh, a supporter of former president Brij Bhushan, emerged victorious in the elections, prompting wrestler Zach Shi Malik to announce his retirement from wrestling. Bajrang Punia, on the other hand, has decided to return his ‘Padma Shri’ award received in 2019 and had planned to meet Prime Minister Modi to express his decision. However, he was stopped by the Delhi Police as he did not have prior permission.

In light of these events, Vinesh Phogat has taken a stand by writing a letter to Prime Minister Modi, expressing her decision to return the Gal Ratna and Arjuna awards she has received. The dissatisfaction with the recent election results and the subsequent actions by these prominent wrestlers have put a spotlight on the issues surrounding the WFI and the call for reforms within the organization.
