CAR-T immunotherapy is usually used in the treatment of blood cancers. Recently, however, it has enabled the complete remission of several patients suffering from lupus. Could the technique therefore be extended to autoimmune diseases?

In recent decades, immunotherapy has revolutionized oncology. In the fight against aggressive blood cancers (leukemias, lymphomas and myelomas), CAR-T cells, a therapy which consists of reprogramming certain white blood cells of patients to destroy cancer cells, have emerged as one of the most promising strategies. In France, several CAR-T treatments have had marketing authorization since 2018, and more than thirty centers are authorized to use them to treat patients with cancer. However, the potential of this treatment would not stop there. At the annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology on December 9, German researchers presented the results “ spectacular » of a trial conducted on 15 patients suffering from autoimmune diseases, including lupus, responsible for damage to various tissues, such as the skin, blood vessels or kidneys…
